The real risks of AI for children

Open-ended chatbots. The biggest risk isn’t AI writing a story — it’s AI a child can talk to freely. Ask anything, get anything: frightening answers, inappropriate content, or confident-sounding nonsense. A child can’t judge what’s real or safe.
No sense of age. Generic AI doesn’t know it’s speaking to a 3-year-old. It uses adult vocabulary, adult assumptions, and adult topics unless something forces it not to.
Data harvesting and ads. Many “free” kids’ apps pay for themselves by collecting attention and data — tracking behaviour, serving ads, and nudging children to keep scrolling.
Made-up facts. AI can state false things with total confidence. For a curious child, that’s misinformation delivered by a trusted-sounding voice.
The pattern is clear: the danger lives in unbounded, unsupervised, monetised AI. So the question for any kids’ app isn’t “does it use AI?” — it’s “how is that AI contained?”
